THE CONCEPT

Collage was a groundbreaking invention of Braque and Picasso, a strong statement of Dada, and a vehicle for Pop art. Not to mention its variations in sculpture, photography and film. It is a medium that by definition incorporates fragments and deals with opposing tensions, broken images, hidden desires, and collective myths. Artworks of this exhibition demonstrate the urgent relevance of collage practice in a contemporary world full of excessive imagery, contingency and continual flux.

Life in an era of information explosion means each encounter (with another person, with information or with image) contains contingency. The fragmented personal experiences are cards in our hands, received by chance. Artists reorganised their cards, brought incongruous into meaningful congress with ordinary and presented them in a new context.

Among many of the artists, making collage is part of a larger impulse towards identity investigation, and reflections on the human condition. We can also find artists appropriating their early works, to put those works in experiments with freshly new rhythm, composition and concepts.

Some artists in this exhibition have structured a rather complex and well developed oeuvre, in which their collage work served as an fascinating window into their thoughts and creative process.

Combing artists from across Asia and Europe, “The Card Players” investigates artworks applied conventional collage methods such as ‘cut and paste’, assemblage, montage, also further into more recently developed areas of digital collage and conceptual collage that utilised space-time elements.
